Brigade Courtyard is a high-density low-rise apartment project in Bengaluru comprising 184 dwelling units of varying sizes on a 3-acre site.

The challenge the project took on was to meet the commercial targets of the developer while meeting two objectives that are key to any multi-family residential project:
1. At the level of the site, create a sheltered sense of community.
2. At the level of the dwelling unit, offer an aura of domesticity that is easily found in villas but often lost in apartments.

The first objective is met by arranging the apartments in two wings, of stilt parking plus four upper floors, that line the long edges of the linear site. Vehicular traffic is confined to the outer perimeter, creating a sheltered interior garden between the two wings. The garden is structured into a sequence of different landscape themes that come together to create a long view that extends into open space external to the site on the other side of the road.

The second objective is met by using a combination of stacks of varied apartment sizes and cantilevers to create a set of terraces at all levels. Each dwelling unit thus gets a room-sized open-to-sky space that is the focal element of the flat, imparting the aura of a villa to a compact apartment. This design strategy yields two further benefits:
1. The terraces create a buffer space in the view from one apartment wing to the other.
2. The building steps back on upper floors, plus the cross-sections staggers to eliminate any continuous surface from ground to terrace. This mitigates the scale of the         building from the garden and alleviates the high density of the complex.
